Anyone reviving a classic musical faces a dilemma: How do you put your stamp on something that’s already indelible in the minds of many fans?
For the creators of “Guys and Dolls,” which opens Friday at The Muni, it meant pursuing two parallel ideas.
The show would be more cartoonish, a larger-than-life spectacle. But some of the lead performances would be more natural, more believable.
Based on stories by Damon Runyon with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, “Guys and Dolls” follows two love stories: gambler Sky Masterson (John O’Connor) and the mission girl he’s trying to woo, Sarah Brown (Elizabeth Donathan); and gambler Nathan Detroit (Tyler Stephenson) and his long-suffering fiancee, Miss Adelaide (Carolyn Otten).
