Q: So he is almost 17 months and I'm pregnant with my second child. When this baby is born he will only be about 21 months. Is it a good idea to get him a baby doll to kind of help him understand how to be around a baby? Or will it be a waste of time because he is so young?

No, its definitely not a waste. But be forewarned... my son was 21 months old when I had my second baby. I bought him a doll... he looked it over, proceeded to pull out the eyelashes, then tossed the doll aside and never touched it again, lol.
It still wasn't a waste for me though, my third baby was a girl and she loved the doll,

I don't think it would be a bad idea at all. I bought my daughter a baby doll and while she really wasn't into dolly play at all ever, she used to like bathing dolly when I bathed her baby brother. She used to walk around with dolly stuck up her shirt. "Dolly's having breakfast." (I breastfed :) )
I think it's a good idea, actually, you can explain to him that you're gonna have a new baby and that he will be a big brother and let him feed the baby doll and stuff to practice for being the big brother.
