Much of "Karen Cries on the Bus" is as dramatically flat as its drab title suggests, but that shouldn't prevent appreciation of its finer qualities. This quiet study of a Colombian woman tackling an emancipation for which she's ill prepared is preachy and somewhat plodding, but an intense central perf from Angela Carrizosa keeps it always watchable, and at home it's been received as a refreshing departure from the usual stories dealing with drugs and violence. As an example of how Latin American cinema is tackling universal contempo issues, "Karen" merits fest play.
